The Herd | Edition No. 22
Welcome back to The Herd! We have a different storyline this week, covering the greatest triathlete of all time - Jan Frodeno. And make sure you catch the end where we give you a jump start on your summer running bucket list! Without further adieu, let’s dive in!
Jan Frodeno
Jan Frodenoʼs rise in triathlon began with a strong foundation in swimming and a natural affinity for endurance sports, which propelled him from his hometown of Cologne, Germany, to the world stage. His breakthrough came at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he stunned the field to win gold in the menʼs triathlon, instantly establishing himself as one of the sport’s elite competitors (1, 2). Building on this Olympic success, Frodeno transitioned to long-distance racing, where he would leave an indelible mark.

Frodenoʼs legacy is defined by his dominance across all distances and his unprecedented achievement of the “triple crown” of triathlon. In 2015, he became the first athlete to win Olympic gold, the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, and the Ironman World Championship, cementing his place in history (3). He went on to win Ironman Hawaii three times and set the Ironman world record with a time of 7:27:53 in 2021, becoming the only person to complete the full distance in under seven and a half hours (4). Frodenoʼs relentless pursuit of excellence, resilience through setbacks, and sportsmanship have inspired a generation of triathletes and sparked a triathlon boom in Germany and beyond.
Retiring in 2023 after a 23-year professional career, Frodeno leaves the sport as a legend, celebrated for his versatility, longevity, and groundbreaking performances (4, 5). His “triple crown” achievement and world records have set a new standard in triathlon, ensuring his legacy will endure for decades as both a champion and an ambassador for the sport.

☀️ Summer Running Bucket List 🏃♀️🍉
Running in the summer hits different—early sunrises, race season energy, and just enough sweat to make you feel tough. To help you make the most of it, here’s your Summer Running Bucket List—a mix of fun, challenge, and a little adventure.
✅ Run at sunrise
Set your alarm early, grab your shoes, and watch the day begin. Bonus points if there’s coffee afterward.
✅ Try a new trail or route
Explore that park, path, or waterfront you always drive past but never run. Summer is the time to mix it up.
✅ Race in a local 5K or fun run
Whether it’s a timed event or a color run, showing up for your local running community is always worth it.
✅ Log a "long run" you’re proud of
Pick a distance that stretches your comfort zone—even if it’s just one mile farther than usual.
✅ Run on vacation
Nothing makes you feel like a travel pro more than logging miles in a new city or along the beach.
✅ Host a water stop for your friends
Set up cold drinks and snacks on a hot day—it’s the most fun you’ll have not running.
✅ Go tech-free for a run
No watch, no music—just you, the road, and your breath. Refreshing in every sense.
✅ Cool down with a popsicle (or smoothie) after
Recovery doesn’t always have to be serious.

Good things come slow—especially in distance running.
